Some people call me the baby whisperer. Truth is, that over the last 16 years I have learned a few tricks to help get little ones to sleep. Getting a newborn to sleep can be challenging, but there are several strategies you can try to help your baby rest peacefully:


  • Establish a bedtime routine: Creating a consistent bedtime routine can signal to your baby that it's time to sleep. This can include activities such as giving your baby a warm bath, reading a story, or singing a lullaby.
  • Maintain a calm environment: Keep the nursery or bedroom quiet, dimly lit, and at a comfortable temperature to help soothe your baby and create a sleep-friendly environment.
  • Use white noise: White noise, such as a fan or a white noise machine, can help mask other sounds and create a calming atmosphere for your baby.
  • Swaddle your baby: Swaddling can help your newborn feel secure and comforted, mimicking the sensation of being in the womb.
  • Feed before bed: Make sure your baby is well-fed before bedtime to help them sleep longer and more soundly.
  • Offer a pacifier: For some babies, sucking on a pacifier can be soothing and help them fall asleep.
  • Monitor sleep cues: Watch for signs that your baby is tired, such as rubbing their eyes, yawning, or fussing, and try to put them to bed before they become overtired.
  • Create a safe sleep space: Ensure your baby's crib or bassinet is safe and free of soft bedding, stuffed animals, or pillows that could pose a suffocation risk.
  • Be patient: It may take some time for your baby to adjust to a sleep schedule, so be patient and flexible as you find what works best for your family.
